Configuring GMail Categories for IMAP
Gmail Tabs Help
Below are instructions for users who wish to filter their emails based on the GMail tabs: Primary, Social, and Promotions.
The majority of users can ignore these directions. However, if you wish to exclude or manage specific tabs, please follow the procedures below.
Option 1: Change GMail tabs into folders
-
Go to GMail Settings at gmail.com using a computer web browser
-
Click See all settings at the top
-
Click Filters and Blocked Addresses
-
Click Create a new filter
-
In the field Includes the words, enter:
category:primary
-
Click Create filter
-
Tick Apply the label
-
Choose New label…
-
Enter the label name:
primary
Note: Creating a label with the name primary will cause GMail to create an IMAP folder called primary containing the emails from your Primary tab.
The same procedure can be repeated using the following categories:
- category:social
- category:promotions
- category:forums
- category:updates
Once you have created the folders for your tabs, do the following in the app on your phone:
- Press Check Connection to refresh the folder list
- Turn ON the primary folder to scan mail for that folder
Option 2: Prevent emails for specific tabs from being delivered to the app
-
Go to GMail Settings in your computer web browser
-
Click See all settings at the top
-
Click Filters and Blocked Addresses
-
Click Create a new filter
-
In the field Includes the words, enter:
category:social
-
Click Create filter
-
Tick Skip the Inbox
This will prevent emails from that category from being delivered to the app.
